As reported by CNN , "'Starved' gets the ax!"
Thanks
to you,
our NEDA members and
the entire eating disorder community,
for your efforts! Together we made sure our
voices were heard!
After NEDA representatives met with
FX Networks executives, pre-screened “Starved”,
and then encouraged FX Networks to cancel the offensive
program, we took action to protest “Starved” the week it
aired by asking our members to contact FX Networks and
program sponsors to express their concerns. More than
1300
NEDA members downloaded the sample letter to contact FX
Networks and the program sponsors. A special thank you
to both Kathy Benn and Brooklyn Assemblyman Felix Ortiz
for allowing us to post their powerful letters on our
website. It was
tremendous joint effort and we appreciate everyone's
participation!
One of
our greatest moments came when Diageo NA, makers of
Smirnoff and Tanqueray, wrote to NEDA and said that they
agreed that Starved
did not meet their placement standards and withdrew
their advertising from the show!
Diageo NA’s Public Relations Director
Laura Peet wrote to NEDA August 26th: “As a
leading premium drinks company we are well aware that it
is possible to handle a controversial subject with
responsibility. … ‘Starved’ does meet our placement
standard. And we had hoped it would treat eating
disorders responsibly, with respect and sensitivity,
even in a comedy. After careful review of the program as
it has aired, we have determined that the program is not
appropriate for our brands or company. Therefore, we
have directed our agency NOT to place any more
Diageo advertising during the broadcast of ‘Starved’.”
We are
also grateful that other sponsors
including Nautilus and various regional sponsors pulled
their support from the show.
Thank
you once again to all NEDA members, and others, who took
time to write, email and call FX Networks. Together, we
created the change we wanted to see!

A very kind and generous parent
has donated books to COPE. These are some of their
favorites that the family used during their struggles
with their daughter's anorexia. These are being stored
at the Halifax Residency and will be available to anyone
interested. Contact Dr. Natalie Evers or Dr. Kathryn
Fraser.

We have continued to meet
monthly at the Halifax Family Residency for
multi-disciplinary case management with Dr. Fraser's
coordination and under the supervision of Dr
Karen Samuels.
Cindy
Jackson can tell you all about her terrific efforts
with the exquisite gift cards, now for sale and the
other outreach she has overseen.
Julia
Howe is relocating to Gainesville at the end of the
year and will be much missed and many heartfelt
thanks for all her efforts, wisdom and contributions
to COPE.

NEDA is pleased to
announce the release of their new curriculum
Healthy Body
Image: Teaching Kids to Eat and Love Their
Bodies Too! Second Edition by Kathy
Kater, LICSW.
“This
updated edition of the most widely-used
curriculum for preventing disordered eating and
body image issues is even better than the
original. Kater's orientation is rooted in the
most successful prevention programs and
research. She presents a resource that should be
incorporated into every fourth, fifth, and sixth
grade classroom.”
–Leigh Cohn,
Editor-in-Chief,
Eating
Disorders: The Journal of Treatment and
Prevention
At
a time when children should feel secure in their
body’s growth, too many learn to feel anxious
about weight and shape and to make choices that
contribute to the very problems they hope to
avoid. Those who have enjoyed teaching the
original
Healthy Body
Image
lessons will find this newly revised edition to
be familiar but improved through the
recommendations of educators and updated
empirical data. As before, carefully planned and
engaging, age-appropriate and cross-curricular
lessons are based on widely recognized
prevention principles.
Reviewed and
edited by renowned experts in the field, Margo
Maine, PhD and Michael Levine, PhD,
Healthy Body
Image, 2nd Edition helps
educators empower students to form a foundation
for acceptance of their bodies based on
recognition of what they can and cannot control
with regard to body size and shape.
“Simply
put, the
Healthy Body Image curriculum
contains the best tools available for
effectively teaching the concepts that
children—and adults, for that matter—need in
order to encourage healthy, realistic body
images. Its elements are a breeze to integrate
into almost every learning environment and
subject area. In today's appearance-obsessed
culture, it is essential for adults who work
with children to have
Healthy Body
Image in their toolkit.”
