Minutes from the March 26th, 2012 were read and accepted.

Treasurer’s Report

Sarah  Benson reported our current balance is:  $.  COPE received  proceeds from the sale of numerous COPE(ing) bags generously created and donated by member/volunteer, Linda Mitchell.

Committees

Education Outreach Committee:

Reports of recent presentations of “Being a Girl in Today’s World” workshops to the 6th graders at Creekside Middle School on May 4th.   Karen Samuels, Cindy Jackson, Linda Mitchell an Debbie Yarbrough attended and delivered workshops.  The response was terrific and much appreciated.   Hinson Middle School was re-scheduled  and will receive the programs in the early weeks after school resumes.

Website updates:  Karen Samuels worked with a new web designer and developed the current website.  It is now written in Joomla, and requires additional assistance.   COPE is currently seeking a new web-master that can navigate Joomla with calendar updates.    Please send any suggestions, and your favorite links, announcements, etc.  to Karen’s email.   She is currently managing the website, but cannot manage the calendar  updates.   Any assistance would be welcomed!

2012 NEDAW WALK:   NEDAW Walk/fun run committee is working on dates, locations and collaboration for a fun walk, yoga class and live music.  Target date has been moved to January 5th, 2013.   Committee includes all COPE members present at the meeting of March 26th, 2012.   Cindy Jackson will assist in arranging for live music performance, Karen Underwood has agreed to guide a yoga class.  The BandShell was considered a possible central location and popular venue.   Embry Riddle A.U. campus is another possibility.  We may hire a race director to assist.  Sarah Benson will inquire if we can enlist and hire a local race director for thos event.

Recent Activities

Being a Girl in Today’s World:    Reports of recent presentations of “Being a Girl in Today’s World” workshops to the 6th graders at Creekside Middle School on May 4th.   Karen Samuels, Cindy Jackson, Linda Mitchell an Debbie Yarbrough attended and delivered workshops. 

 

2012 Suicide Prevention Conference sponsored by DSC offered a COPE informational table.  MUCH THANKS to Andrea Rojas, who attended and was at the COPE table on June7th.

     

Upcoming Activites:

America the Beautiful II:  The Thin Commandments, premiered in Los AngelesCOPE confirms  a FREE showing of this documentary on September 10th, 2012.  Richard Stickney, Director of Diversity Initiatives at ERAU coordinated the authorization to co-sponsor this film night.      SAVE  THE DATE:  Monday, Sept. 10th  at 6:30pm.   Filmmaker, Daryl Roberts will attend and discuss the making of the film, the response across the USA, and his most recent efforts creating America the Beautiful III!    We will screen the film at the Auditorium in the Willie Miller Instructional Center in the Lemerand Complex. Volunteers are needed for this event.  This film will be offered to the community at large and we discussed press releases and announcements to local news media, radio, schools, colleges, yoga studios, health food stores, etc. 

 

COPE AT APA:  Karen Samuels, Ph.D. and Kathryn Fraser, Ph.D., are scheduled to present at the national convention of APA (American Psychological Association) on Friday, August 3rd.  Their talk describes how COPE teamed with the local community in developing and presenting Being a Girl in Today’s World district wide.   Improving Body Image to Prevent Disordered Eating: Outreach Intervention for Teenage Girls will be a part of Society for the Psychology of Women:  Connections, Intersections and Coalitions: Feminist Psychology for Change.

COPE at Forum for Behavioral Science in Family Medicine: Karen Samuels, Ph.D. and Kathryn Fraser, Ph.D. are scheduled to present at the abovementioned Forum.  Their workshop:  Comprehensive approach to treating eating disorders: Guidelines for Primary Care, is scheduled for  Sept. 29th in Chicago, IL
